Gridcannon

This game was designed by Tom Francis who put the rules online and it's on Boardgamegeek.

Tableau

Number cards, 2 to 10, go in the central 3 x 3 grid, and royals go in the perimeter cells around it.

The top deck is the draw pile, and under it are royals set aside during drawing cards for the starting .grid. Ploy cards aces and jokers are on the far right.

Start

At the start of a new game, the grid is set randomly with royals set aside under the draw deck, along with aces and jokers.

Place royals using the same rules as when drawn during the game.

One card from the grid may be moved to the draw pile and replaced.

End

Once every one of the 12 periphery cells has a dead royal (ie face-down), you win.

You lose if the draw deck runs empty or a royal's health goes above 20.

Draw and place a card each turn

Royals

These are placed on a perimeter cell of a neighbouring grid card using this precedence of rules:

  1. Highest value of same suit.
  2. Highest value of same colour.
  3. Highest value.

If there's a tie, or it's a corner, the player can choose.

Numbers

These are placed on a grid cell over a card with the same or lower number regardless of suit.

The placed card kills a royal if the 2 cards between it and the royal add up to equal or beat its health and they have the required suits.

Jack
Basic health 11 and attackers can be any suit.
Queen
Basic health 12 and attackers must be same colour.
King
Basic health 13 and attackers must be same suit.

If it is not possible to place a card on the grid and there are no ploys to be used, a royal gets it as a health booster using this precedence:

  1. Lowest value of same suit.
  2. Lowest value of same colour.
  3. Lowest value.

Ploys

Ace
Move cards from a desired grid cell to the bottom of the draw deck.
Joker
Move the top card from a grid cell to another as if drawn from the deck.
